There is something to be said for a DJ crew that not only revolutionized House music but also spawned a plethora of stars on their own right.
The Chicago House music scene exploded in the 1980s as the Hot Mix 5 and their radio show “Saturday Night Live Ain’t No Jive” on WBMX, hosted by Armando Rivera, became the number 1 radio show in the city and the DJs and their subsequent replacements became the hottest commodities everywhere.
On Saturday June 11th, this legendary crew will be celebrating their 35th year in a major way: They’ll be taking over the massive McCormick Place for the Hot Mix 5 Festival. The original members Kenny “Jammin” Jason (the originator), Farley Jackmaster Funk, Grammy Award nominee Ralphi “The Razz” Rosario, Mickey “Mixin'” Oliver and Scott “Smokin'” Silz will each have their own stage and their choice of DJs. (A sixth stage will be the Hip-Hop stage.)
Masterminded by promoter Tony Rosales, this event will be going from 12pm noon till 12am midnight. Other DJs so far confirmed are Julian “Jumpin'” Perez, Mike “Hitman” Wilson, Tim “Spinning” Shommer, Frankie “Hollywood” Rodriguez, Marshall Jefferson, Gene Hunt, Jamie 3:26, Czboogie and a guest appearance by none other than Bad Boy Bill. Live performers will include Tyree Cooper, Fast Eddie, Byron Stingily, Robert Owens and Mr. Lee.
But that’s just the tip of the iceberg as the event promises to boast a total of 60 DJs and 30 live acts, a health fair and DJ panels.
