K Joy grew up in Chicago with Chip E. and was prominently featured on some of his earliest tracks, most notably a version of “Like This” that became among the early locally-produced tracks that could genuinely be called “Ron Hardy classics.”

A few years back K Joy made a spirited return in collaboration with some of the guys from Cyberjamz Radio, as well as with Ricardo Miranda on the Chicago House Sessions 12″. Now she’s back with Miranda on Noble Square for a 10th anniversary release. According to the label, “the original instrumental master reels were lost” and so this record features “new disco & proto house music” on both sides. “Do You Want Me” fits the first one: sultry vocals and a soft and mottled funky disco beat makes this sound like some genuine relic from the 1970s. “The DJ Knows What I Like” plays with zigzag percussion and pendulous claps holding up synth lines purified by alchemy & battery acid down to primary patterns. Fantastic recording here that digs down to the roots and grabs hold of ’em.
