Homero Espinosa: You Should Be Dancing

Moulton Music closes out 2016 with the explosive “You Should Be Dancing,” a new track from Homero Espinosa, Mark Farina and Seven Davis, Jr. Released as a Traxsource promo on December 2, “You Should Be Dancing” is currently scaling up the charts and will be released worldwide on Friday December 16, 2016.

We talked with Homero Espinosa in the first of two features on this track; expect an exclusive DJ mix from the man who made all of your favorite DJ mixes – Mr. Mark Farina – tomorrow. New Mark Farina mix online now here.

So Homero how long have you and Mark known each other and what made you decide to work together?

I first met Mark back in 2006 in Miami while at WMC. Actually, I didn’t even meet him directly – I was passing out CDs with a bunch of new music I was shopping (mind you, this was when I first started putting music out) and my friend handed him a CD. I was too nervous to approach him. Low and behold, a couple of weeks later Mark emailed and said that he’d like to license one of the tracks off the CD to a Ministry of Sound compilation. I was like, “WHAAAAATTT!” After that, I made sure Mark received all new music I made and I felt his support from way back then.

Fast forward 10 years to when I had a studio space at Moulton Studios in San Francisco. Moulton’s lease was running out and I had to relocate my studio. The idea of Moulton Studios coming to a close prompted me to make efforts to have some of my long-time goals come to fruition. So, I reached out to Mark about collaborating on a track before I moved out and he was totally down. In our first session, we immediately got into a steady groove and knocked out a couple of solid ideas in a short period of time. One of the tracks was “Work.Groove,” a Summer 2015 Moulton Music release.

I’ve been a big fan of Seven Davis, you must have been so excited to finally have him on board!

Oh yeah, for sure! It was Mark’s idea to reach out to Seven. We were working on this latest track and I was like, “we need a vocal on this.” Mark said what do you think of Seven Davis, Jr.? I shouted, “Hell yeah!” Seven was really excited about the track and it was awesome to work with him.

Have you thought about going on a mini-tour with you, Seven and Mark?

Funny you should mention that. I was chatting with Seven a couple of weeks ago about the release and he mentioned we should try and get everyone together for a show. I’d love to do it! Fingers crossed we can make some shows happen in 2017. We’re definitely going to work with Seven again – that dude is sooo talented.

I love love love your deep and sexy tracks! I started listening to some of your stuff again on Traxsource and I was super impressed, they’ve got so much legit soul to them. That’s not something that can be made despite the whole “Deep House” trend that has been happening in these past years…

Thank you! That’s the musician in me channeling my disco roots. I love, love, love where our roots come from and I try and honor that in my music. I love playing but I also love sampling music so I feel like I’ve found this balance where I can play a little and just have fun.

Where do you derive your inspiration from? What’s it like sitting down in the studio with you?

Good question. A lot of my inspiration comes from crate digging. I still go to the record store every chance I get. Here, in the Bay Area we’re so lucky to have a couple of big stores that still carry a lot of used vinyl (Amoeba and Rasputins). I try and go at least twice a month and the records I buy inspire me.

Another big inspiration is my family. My wife and I have a 4 year old son and balancing work, family, and music can be challenging but it’s also extremely motivating. Before getting married and having a kid, I’d spend hours on a loop and my output of music was really low. After our son was born, I just stopped second guessing my decisions and just went with the sounds that came to me. That’s when folks started noticing my music, so I took that as a sign.

I’m also a studio nerd – I geek out on synths and mixing and all that good stuff. I’ve been really lucky to be surrounded by such talented folks while at Moulton Studios and I picked up a lot of tips and tricks from everyone there. Shout out to Chris Lum, Fred Everything, Miguel Migs, Jonah Sharp! All those cats shared a wealth of studio wisdom over the years and I continue to use and grow it every day.

When I’m in the studio I like to work fast. I find that when I get stuck on a track I end up losing interest. What works best for me is to get the idea going quickly then move onto arranging. I generally have 5-8 different projects going at once and I cycle through them until they’re done.
