AppleTV+ Jumps into Music Docs with Beastie Boys Story

The Spike Jonez documentary will debut on April 24, 2020.

Following in the footsteps of Netflix, HBO and Showtime, AppleTV+ has jumped into the field of classic music documentaries with their acquisition of Beastie Boys Story.

The documentary produced by Spike Jonze will premiere on AppleTV+ on April 24, 2020 following a limited theatrical run at IMAX theaters beginning April 3, 2020.

The documentary grew out of two recent Jonez and Beastie Boys collaborations, the 2018 memoir Beastie Boys Book and subsequent the book tour/stage show, Beastie Boys Story, that followed. (See the trailer above.)

A statement announcing the acquisition quoted surviving Beasties’ Mike D and Ad Rock as saying:

There are some friends you have lunch with so many times over the years, you know their order. Spike is one of those friends. And even when you don’t recognize anything on the menu, he comes up with something good for the whole table. Like when we wondered what to do when our book comes out… then Spike placed his order: You will put on a show for the children.

Aside from these projects from the last few years fans will remember an earlier 1998 documentary, Beastieography:
