As many in the music and dance community were arriving this morning in Amsterdam for ADE, came the news that Ray “Mr. Voodoo Ray” Ultarte had passed away on Tuesday. Exact details are still pending.

Ray was a bigger than life figure in the New York club, dance, & culture scene. He is probably best known, over the last nine years, for his partnership with Tony “Touch” Hernandez in the wildly popular Funkbox & Toca Tuesday parties. Voodoo also hosted Barbara Tucker’s Let the Singer Be Heard events, the annual Mi Casa Holiday in Mexico (which just took place two weeks ago), and many other events / parties. He has been a dancer, entertainer, and even appeared in the recent Netflix show, The Get Down… since 1989.

Warm, caring, funny… with that smile that never quit and boundless energy, he will be missed. I will be doing a feature on him in the coming weeks that will include reflections from many luminaries in the industry who knew and loved him.
