News reaches us this morning that legendary house music vocalist Kathy Brown is facing a renewed battle with cancer and is launching a fundraising appeal for help meet this challenge.
Brown was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer a year ago, which according to a release has now spread to her brain. The diagnosis was a “total shock” to friends and family and required an emergency operation.
According to her family, Kathy is currently undergoing radiotherapy and immunotherapy treatments. “The road ahead is going to be a challenge unlike any she has faced before.”
Chanta Joyner, Kathy’s daughter, has set up a GoFundMe campaign to help Kathy with the financial challenges of being unable to perform while she faces the very real physical challenges of cancer treatment.
Toolroom Records has likewise set up a charity single featuring Kathy Brown with Wh0, Mark Knight and James Hurr. “Turn Me Deeper” (a call back to her most well-known single, 1994’s “Turn Me Out”) is out January 19 2024; all proceeds will go to Kathy, including publishing earnings from all original writers and royalties from all performers. Preorder is up here.
Kathy Brown is a legend in the industry, a vocalist with more than 700 appearances on Discogs and that is likely a severe undercount. She’s recorded with producers including Blaze, David Morales, Booker T — an array of collaborations so vast you can likely type [your favorite producer’s name] + Kathy Brown and come up with a track you know by heart. Go ahead. Try it.
