Gems like these are some of my favorite releases, the diamonds in the mud of Record Store Day exclusives. Back in January we told you about a cover of Des’ree’s multiplatinum single “You Gotta Be” and its sunshiney delivery by UK soul artist S.E.L. (Soulful Emma Louise). It was reworked by DJ Spen (his SELSoul remix was brilliant) and released on his label Quantize.
The dancey soul single has been pressed up on vinyl and will appear with a cover of Philly soul godfather Dexter Wansel’s 1979 classic “The Sweetest Pain,” co-produced here by Quantize Records’ Gary Hudgins. Big beautiful vocals, luscious instrumentation and a big, big sound that captures a room:
S.E.L.’s “You Gotta Be”/”The Sweetest Pain” will be her first vinyl release on Record Store Day, Saturday April 21 2018. “The Sweetest Pain” will be released digitally in May.
