Is there still a place in the world for Abacus? The last time I saw this guy he was in Chicago for a night at Boom Boom Room and it came about as a random street encounter in the environs of Gramaphone.
That was long ago: Boom Boom Room is gone, Gramaphone has a different owner and staff and Abacus hasn’t released anything as far as I know since the irresistible “iDRUM This Djembe” on Kai Alce‘s NDATL Muzik in 2011.
Suddenly out of nowhere comes this very strange record – a single sided vinyl “white label” (which has the complete artist info on the front). “Basic Amounts” has those full, rich Austin Bascom drums filling up the speakers like they’re just poured on in there, an Afro-Latin flavor that serves as the pendulum swing for Abacus’ hypnotic vibes. You have to listen to this to remember how much you missed it and how lame the imitations sound.
