Pretty sure I’ve said this before, but while there’s really no questioning the quality and depth of feeling in Andy Compton’s soulful vocal tracks, I’ve always felt that the solo instrumentals (with whatever number of live instruments and musicians he managed to rustle up for the sessions) are where he really shines.

Those jam-oriented PENG EPs under The Rurals moniker that show up from time to time are to die for, but I admit I’m the minority, and you can feel a little bit of that vibe on the remixes of “Sunshine Through the Rain.”

This is the type of song that asserts itself, as does Celestine’s jazz-infused performance, overloaded as it is with thrilling but tasteful vocal acrobatics. The Rurals remix is where it’s at for me, as you can guess. The Situation remix turns the drums wayyyy up in the mix and runs a close second.
