Deep stabs and dives into soul – they cut the edge off the electro on “Feel It Now,” a new single from South African producer Cornelius SA and Zimbabwean-born vocalist Jackie Queens. Cornelius is familiar to careful diggers from his EPs on Dopewax; Jackie is a new name to me but her achingly soulful delivery and light manipulation of the chorus makes for a superb performance. This is more synthetic and dark than most South African house that I’ve heard – the waves of distortion provide for a powerful emotional counterpoint and twist a lyric into a dark or desperate plea. Powerful stuff.
