With so much throwback house and constant remakes of the classics around at the moment, it can be hard to define, let alone express, the differences between the originals we still adore and these largely hollow soundalikes. Perhaps it’s the indefinable qualities, the authenticity, the depth of feeling, the perfectly imperfect grooves that make the difference. I still struggle to express the reasons why so many shiny, accomplished and seemingly soulful productions from obviously talented producers leave me utterly cold these days.

So I’ll probably also struggle to explain why the first few bars of Crackazat‘s new single “Never Ending Love” made me smile from ear to ear, and kept me grinning until it was time to rewind and play it again. This track just somehow feels like the real deal, and the fact that what sound like vocal and chord samples are actually played and sung by this consistently impressive producer makes it even more enticing. Released on Nervous Records, this feels right at home next to the label’s golden era releases, and an easy head and shoulders above much of its more recent output.

With a vocal refrain that could easily come courtesy of Robert Owens, jazzy Rhodes piano loops, shuffling, swung drums and a rolling disco bass-line, “Never Ending Love” just does everything right. And like any self-respecting timeless house release, it comes complete with a tougher dub mix, raising the tempo and re-looping up the track for those looking to dance harder. I really don’t know what else to say, but in a sea of paint-by-numbers House records, this is a bright and colourful little masterpiece.
