So few things are certain in life but the quality of what you find on a DJ Aakmael record is one of them.
Other Realms is the title of his new vinyl release for Second Hand Records and presents three adventurous tracks pushing deep house to the furthest pylons on the horizon while remaining essentially soulful, tasteful and in-the-pocket. The title track uses some soulful chords as the backdrop for a percussion-driven journey, hypnotic and drawing on a cosmic energy. The second track (made up of four characters from, I think, Japanese and which I can’t reproduce here) nods from beginning to end. Aakmael is one of a small handful of producers whose records could be covered by a jazz band without very much interpretation being required at all. They just flow.
