“Love Explosion” is one of the most coveted 7″ records in history, in any genre. The 1980 track released on Arpco seemed like it was destined to be one of those always-bootlegged, never licensed records (rumor had it because of Donnell was singing over another band’s instrumental backing track, “The Beat Goes On & On” by Ripple). Numero Group finally obtained the rights to it for their Ultra High Frequency compilation (before that, Under the Influence Vol 1 on Joey Negro‘s Z Records lead with it but it’s available only on the full release). According to Athens of the North, “Numero actually just beat me to a punch doing a deal on this. I had spoken to Donnell loads, he always seemed to be in a restaurant car park when I called, he was always happy to sing down the phone and talk about his recordings but we never got round to signing a deal.” The label here actually reads that it’s been licensed from Numero, in case you were wondering about the provenance. Rather than “Secret Love Affair,” this one is backed by the After Five released “Your Love Is Dynamite.” In any event: Donnell’s vocal is amazing, this record is amazing, it’s the holy grail to many DJs and here it is on 7″ again.
