Melange Records don’t last long in the shop — I don’t know how many copies they press but it’s never enough. That it’s better to keep them thirsty than drowning the shops in records nobody wants is an admirable philosophy to have in the era of spray-and-pray. Previous records from Melange have featured Byron The Aquarius and Javonntte, and this time Earl Jeffers takes the spotlight with Higher.
The A side track features a collaboration with Kaidi Tatham, and never has Kaidi played on a track and not made it better. “The Essence” has that fuzzy, cloudy deep house sound that works so well in intimate settings, gilded with a gorgeous flute ducking in and out from behind the groove.
The title track soars — a soulful jam drawing heavily on R&B and drums that pop like bottle rockets. Lloyd Everitt provides the “additional vocals” and they really add a vibrant color to this track. That’s it as far as the credits go, though Jeffers’ tracks sound so big like they’re made by an army.
