A sparse release schedule for the last few years has left a discernible void in Chicago’s electronic music community, but Fresh Meat Records comes roaring back here with a fine collection of talent on first the Afterhours Edition of When Bad People Cook Good Food from the Fall of 2017 and now Chord Shift from Frankie Vega. Long-standing labels become institutions and so do people, and there are few whose contributions to Chicago’s electronic music scene from birth to however you want to classify today who can rival Frankie Vega’s own. That’d be well enough but this isn’t a gold watch: Chord Shift is a dynamic release, with landscape-shaking bass and grooves that will move people if not bring mountains. The Audio Soul Project Remix features a catchy, stabbing vocal sample situates this right on the frontier of techno and deeper vibes, so “deep techno” is the way we’re going with this.
Both “Chord Shift” and “Tribal Shift” share a common DNA, the latter with thunderous percussion that sounds like a fucking locomotive driving through the bass bins.
