Having just heard the sad news that the brilliant Lost My Dog Records are to close their doors in 2015, I must confess that writing this review feels bittersweet to say the least. Young Harry Wolfman is a producer in the midst of a meteoric rise towards the ranks of dance music’s elite. Since his Booty Call EP on Lost My Dog in 2013, he’s released music with Strictly Rhythm and become part of Ben Pearce’s respected “Purp & Soul” collective in his native city of London.
It’s only fitting that Harry should return to Lost My Dog for one more release before they close up shop. And what a release it is. Featuring fellow Londoner Laurence Guy, title track “The Lone Grazer” is a steady building, warm and smooth Deep House epic; sparse and retro enough to please the hipster generation, yet containing more than enough substance to please House music’s old guard. Also featuring Laurence Guy, “Mole Jug” delves into jazzier territory with rhodes chords, distant fragments of vocals and saxophone melodies riding a deceptively powerful percussion groove. I suppose “Diagonal Galleon” might be described as “Filter House,” but only with the best possible of intentions. Soulful vocals and plaintive guitars weave in and out of earshot within a dense and compelling arrangement, reminiscent of early French House music. The EP closes with “Fish Fingers” (that’s a British culinary staple), a darker and more twisted late night affair featuring spacey chords and an airy, effortless arrangement, sure to lead deeper heads toward a memorable dance-floor moment.
With, in my opinion, their best ever releases ever arriving over the last year or so, it’s going to be very sad to say goodbye to Lost My Dog. However they assure me they have a few more special releases up their sleeves before it’s all over, including an album from label founder Pete Dafeet.
