Jimpster’s sound is in full flower on Soul Spectral, the latest EP from the diamond-quality Freerange label. The title track “Soul Spectral” is at the heart of this release — and at the heart of THAT is a melancholic and almost aspirational piece on the trumpet performed by Greg Paulus. As much as any singer could, Paulus’ blue and somber horn makes this piece of early morning deep house work, along with some smooth work on the congas courtesy of Laroye. Jimpster’s dub mix is an absolute stomp, a drum lover’s edit that will drive a dancefloor absolutely wild.
Two other tracks are on here and they’re no slouch. In fact “Think of You Always” is as good as the title track, another nightcrawler masterpiece with fragments of a modern Moog orchestra of synths and organs drifting through the chords and steady kicks like a velvet haze. This was produced in very limited quantities with a deliberately white label-like aesthetic, so buy-on-sight even before you listen. You won’t regret it.
