Paul Cut is among the youngest producers that you have to consider “buy on sight.” You’ll be rewarded here, as the A side of The Shadow EP holds two of the best tracks the precocious Paris musician, DJ (check out his 5 Mag Mix here) and producer has made to date.
“But Her Fly” is simply banging – jazzy keys give a virtuoso touch to a track reminiscent of Chez Damier at the absolute height of his considerable powers. The title track starts with more jazzy aesthetics and then goes right for the jugular. What you wind up with is a boogie-down track that can be looped almost forever.
The B side features a turned-down remix of “The Shadow” by Hugo LX and heralds further explorations in jazz and roots on “Kiddo.” It’s pretty weird to say a guy this young is “without peer,” but when you hear someone who does deep house this well and this early, nothing else comes to mind.
