Des’ree’s multi-platinum single “You Gotta Be” gets covered and the cover reworked by DJ Spen on the latest smash from Quantize. The original has been licensed into oblivion but the sunshiney delivery by S.E.L. (UK soul artist Soulful Emma Louise) captures that original optimism and vigor.
The real treat here are the remixes from Spen. His SELSoul Remix has a snaky, retro-’90s vibe, big bass held up by shaky tambourines and S.E.L.’s big beautiful voice. Spen’s “Gotta Be Housed Remix” aims for a ’90s vibe of a different type: huge chords, bright synths that evoke the dance soul of The Brand New Heavies.
