One magnificent 7″, both for what’s on it and for what it means. This is the 25th anniversary of Teflon Dons’ Rudiments EP, a 12″ released in 1996 that has gone on to become a cult classic. Usually these sort of editions are pushed out by someone else — either a young enthusiast or someone with more sinister intentions. So it’s even better to see these gems polished up by Worldship Music, the original label and home base for the Dons. The two of the six tracks selected from the heavy, vibin’-as-fuck original EP are the spellbinding “Sun Fist Rising” and the soulful shuffle of “You Ain’t Really Down.” A question of nostalgia always arises on records like this. Rest assured: if these dropped today they’d be on Radio 1 within a week, a sensational record whether you’re hearing it for the first time or the 51st.
