Better late than out of stock: this glistening gem of Italo funk surfaced in November on vinyl but I only got my hands on it last month. Shamefully, it then sat for another few weeks before I dropped the needle and it blew my mind.
What is Azura? Who are they? They are apparently a “mysterious duo” and you won’t find much info about them at all. This sounds like a throwback from the late ’80s but it’s definitely an homage made much more recently. It sounds like some hardcore fans of the often overlooked “Italo dream house” world — a micro-genre prominent in Italy from 1989 through the early ’90s, a blend of Chicago-style house seasoned with a “Mediterranean patina.”
If it’s truly an homage, then I have to say “Theme From Azura” just about fucking nails it. The “dream” mix is exactly that: a smooth blend of moody Heard-esque deep house scrubbed down in Balearic waves. But the real shit is in the “house mix”: huge chords, vocal clips and a fat sax cleans up for a big bottom. Not a fan of riots on the dancefloor but this might cause one.
