Retroscope hits its stride with the title track, a hard techno production that manages to marry the grimy hook of something like L.I.E.S. with a drone that is all 9West’s own. It’s the centerpiece but not the only highlight of Retroscope, a new EP from the Greek duo out from USM Recordings. “Temptations” is a close second: hypnotic, deep techno that’s not afraid to open the valves and pump the room full of bass. “Timeshifted” presents a more urgent perspective, opening up to wide vistas and an almost cinematic vision.
