We last caught up with DJ and radio presenter Coco Cole back in 2019, when she self-released released a quirky EP named Human Larvae under the alias “Cimmerii.” In the years since, she’s ditched the day job at London’s Capital Xtra radio station and moved to the English seaside, to concentrate more on production. Issued independently on her new Pisces Season imprint, “Flamingo” is the first we’re hearing from the new stash of work she’s been teasing on Instagram for some time now.

Despite its driving tempo, “Flamingo” is a poised & melodic cut, ’90s-infused without being stuck in the past, with instrumentation and arrangement you can immediately trust. Upon pressing play, memories immediately came flooding back of Global Hypercolor t-shirts (“Generra Hypercolor” in the USA I believe), and all piling into a friend’s beat-up car to search for tell-tale strobe lights in the night sky that would signify an illicit gathering in some remote field. Put simply, there’s something about this tune, maybe the euphoric piano line or the cut-up dub vocal snippets, that powerfully summons up my own rural rave awakenings. I wonder if those readers across the pond who danced in the deserts of California as youngsters might feel the same, but this is not dance music for urban clubland. This is music for the great outdoors. It demands space — a big sky above and earth below. I wonder whether Coco’s move out of the city has played a part here in the track’s feel, but I certainly look forward to hearing this tune in its natural habitat of fields, festivals and road trips this summer. An absolute belter.
