British radio/club DJ and dance music tastemaker Coco Cole has had a meteoric rise over the last 6 years or so, playing giant stages at Tomorrowland and Pacha Ibiza and becoming the only electronic/dance host on national commercial station Capital Xtra.
Unlike so many of her new-school contemporaries, it seems that Coco has truly done her homework on the origins of our culture; homework which she proudly displays on her debut solo release under the alias Cimmerii.
Hints of German and American electronic pioneers permeate the Human Larvae EP. Ghostly echoes of Kraftwerk, Vangelis, Juan Atkins et al lie beneath the surface of this beautiful two tracker. The music is haunting, beautiful retro-futurism; thankfully far too self-aware to become objectionably conceptual. Both cuts are melodic and warm with bags of humanity and character; both come highly recommended. In an age of hype and conformity, it’s nice to see an artist quietly launching a new label that seems like it might have something genuinely unique to offer.
