Putting my vote in here for Innermoods as one of the best labels in dance music. James Duncan’s label is the truth and if you want to know where your favorite DJ gets those rare dope jams, this is one of the hidden caches supplying secret weapons. There haven’t been a ton of releases, and that’s the point: you can’t claim any of them are non-essential or filler. Innermoods records have hand-stamped labels and often they don’t even have any music on the flipside. But what’s on one side of the plate is some of the best house music being made.
Innermoods #8 is another hand-stamped quasi-white label featuring Duncan on trumpet playing with Detroit’s Javonntte and DJ Romain over two tracks that have an informal, jam-based vibe. The lead track with Javonntte is catnip for dancefloors – deep, dubby and sweating out soul like nitroglycerin off bricks of dynamite. Duncan’s trumpet on accompaniment adds a real depth to these tracks, particularly the late night bedroom disco jam with DJ Romain, “NYC.”
