Lively house with a French touch. Jolene 11 from Jérémy Delvila and Jolene Records will sound familiar to old ears — it’s sample-heavy, disco loops, vibrant percussion and a disco groove buried like Piltdown Man at the heart of it. But it’s primetime body-moving music. It’s hard not to feel something stirring when you put these tracks on, and for so long as dance music remains utilitarian — it’s music made for a specific purpose, and primary one being heavily hinted at in its name — this is the kind of stuff a house DJ should have in doubles.
“Back In the Groove” is ludicrously catchy and incredibly dense — it’s bursting with brass, little guitar strums and drums that rise out of the mix and grab you. “Stand Up And Be You” is purpose-built around a looped disco riff that buzzes like bubbles of champagne. “Without You” initially struck me as a departure from the blueprint — it’s more complex, relying on a riff that isn’t abrasive but sounds like sandpaper after the incredibly smooth tracks that preceded it. Stick around past the halfway point and you’ll find its repetition is persuasive, or maybe Delvila’s little packet of magic dust is just that effective. Danny Parton, who is the proprietor in these parts, also remixes “Without You.” Good remix from an ultra nice EP.
