It seems like the UK is the place to be if you’re looking for a truly diverse, all-star cast that covers Soul, Funk, Disco, Afro, Dub, Dancehall and Garage. We’ve been setting our eyes on going to 51st State Festival for some time now, and 2019 marks their 5th anniversary. With last year selling out, word is spreading fast that this is the festival to be at.
Set to happen on Saturday August 3, 2019 in London’s Trent Park, 51st State Festival features a staggering list of 100+ DJs and performers throughout 7 stages: The Groove Odyssey Main Stage, Found Stage, Back to 95 Stage, We Love Soul Stage, Hot Wuk Stage, Disco Disco Stage and House FM VIP.
So we’ve compiled a short and sweet list of 5 reasons why 51st State Festival needs to be scribbled in bright red in your must-do events for the summer:
1. Feed Your Soul
When you go to a festival, who says it has to always be all big banger C02 cannon-esqe explosive electronic music? It doesn’t. Here you can get your soul fed in more ways than one. Let Kerri Chandler and the Kings of House (Louie Vega & David Morales) take you to church, Terry Hunter and Norman Jay have you belting songs of hope, or Mood ll Swing, Opolopo and Bobby & Steve stomping your feet.
2. Because Disco
It’s where it all started. When dancefloors became everyone’s Friday and Saturday nights. You get to see the icons of the genre like London’s Joey Negro, New York’s John Morales and Soul Clap, and oh and let’s not forget France’s uber chic DJ Dimitri from Paris.
3. Garage all day
You will be at the birthplace, the epicenter, the mecca of the Garage genre. The list of names populating the lineup alone is worth going, and it would be a musical lesson you will never forget. Todd Edwards, Wookie, Matt Jam Lamont, Creed… and it says at the very top of the list no less… “Surprise Birthday Guest, UK’s Number 1 Garage DJ.” Your guess is as good as ours, but if it’s who I think it is, then it might be the man with the most epic Boiler Room set ever!
4. Live Acts galore
We’ve always said, nothing can replace the electricity and energy of a live act. You’re relying 100 percent on a human voice to sing, fingers to riff on the guitar and keyboards…it’s all kinetic waves being passed on from real musicians feeding off of their apostles. The absolutely legendary Funk and Disco band Heatwave will be in the building folks, not to mention Crazy P Soundsystem, vocalists Crystal Waters, Julie McNight, Monique Bingham, Melba Moore, Barbara Tucker, Stylo G, Elizabeth Troy and Kelle le Roc to name but a few.
5. Beat It
For those who like their music with a little bit more of an edge to it, they’ve got you covered. King of Tech House Dennis Ferrer, Roger Sanchez, Todd Terry and Kevin Sanderson are some of the DJs that will have the harder beats on deck.
