What began as a free sound system block party in a Wicker Park alley and became a cherished Chicago tradition is returning from hiatus this summer.
There will be a 19th annual Silver Room Sound System Block Party, returning after several years in a new form: a single day ticketed event held at outdoor fairgrounds at The Salt Shed (1357 N. Elston Ave, Chicago, IL 60642) on July 18 2026. Tickets are available from silverroomblockparty.com.
“We’re back, and it means everything,” the Silver Room wrote in a release. “After time away and hearing how deeply this gathering lives within the city, we knew it was time to return with intention. The Silver Room Block Party has always been more than a moment. It is a reflection of Chicago’s culture, sound, and spirit, where music, art, and community come together in a way that feels both rooted and forward.
“This year carries that same energy, shaped by the people who have made it what it is.”
With the theme of “In Pursuit Of ____”, this year’s Block Party features music (still TBA but usually featuring everything that can be called “soul” or adjacent to it, from house to R&B, Afrobeat, hip hop and neo-soul) and vendors from the community. Williams told Block Club that the theme is “a response to [America250] and what this means to different Americans — what does it mean to be an American, a citizen, a Black American? Some of these questions will come up and be thought about as we do these different events across the city.”
The new format for the 2026 Block Party is the latest installment in the elaborate and winding history of the event, starting near the Silver Room’s former location in Wicker Park. The Block Party moved with the store to Hyde Park in 2015, then became a two day ticketed festival held on Oakwood Beach (5 Mag’s cover story on the Chicago house DJ collective 3 Degrees Global was tied in with the last event). The cost of the event (and often the losses from the event that Williams and the Silver Room paid out of pocket) escalated over time, from “thousands of dollars” in the Wicker Park era to production costs that “soared to $1.5 million.” Last year the Silver Room launched a crowdsourcing campaign to absorb lingering losses and plan for the future.
