2 Live Crew's Luther Campbell is running for Congress

Uncle Luke goes to Washington?

Hip hop pioneer, Miami bass legend and free speech activist Luther Campbell, who was subject of a notorious 1990 obscenity prosecution, is in the running in the Democratic primary for Florida’s open but contentious 20th Congressional District.

Campbell, whose 1989 album with 2 Live Crew As Nasty As They Wanna Be was declared obscene by a federal court and became a cause célèbre and early battle in what we now call “the culture war,” is running on a platform including job creation, affordable housing and insurance reform. In a campaign announcement, Campbell cited his fight “defending free speech all the way to the United States Supreme Court” and his career as an entrepreneur as influencing his decision to run for Congress.

Campbell previously ran for Miami-Dade County mayor in 2011, coming in fourth.

Florida’s 20th congressional seat is currently vacant, as the incumbent congresswoman Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick resigned effective April 21 2026. She was widely reported to be on the verge of expulsion by the House of Representatives over allegations that she absconded with $5 million in FEMA funds and directed them to her congressional campaign.

Though she was indicted by federal prosecutors in November, Cherfilus-McCormick is actually running in the open primary to reclaim the seat she resigned from last month. She is one of five candidates (which could soon be six, as Politico reports that Debbie Wasserman Schultz, currently representative in the 25th district and former Democratic National Committee chair, may run here instead of in the 20th district she currently represents).

The 20th district includes parts of Broward and Palm Beach Counties, including areas stretching into For Lauderdale and Pompano Beach. Kamala Harris won the district by 39 points over Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential election; it was previously held by Alcee Hastings before he died in office in 2021 at the age of 84.

Campbell has been head coach of Miami’s Edison Senior High School’s football team prior to resigning to run for office. Among other events, he has a fundraiser with Rick Ross scheduled for next week:
