Years before someone thought to dub a certain type of track “melodic house,” there was Rasmus Faber, producer extraordinaire, crafting some of the most head-friendly riffs and exquisitely-designed grooves in the scene. Nothing could be further from what Beatport calls “melodic house” but it is: the bright, uptempo energy of disco mapped onto contemporary house grooves, music that’s pretty enough to be pop and arranged with a complexity that stretches dancefloors to their limit but never snaps back. Sampling from Faber’s Farplane label is like watching an animated film broken down into single frames — you can stop and watch the evolution of an essential figure in modern dance music as it happens, track-by-track over a 20 year timeframe.

Too Little, Too Late is the latest cell in the movie and showing what might be Faber in his final form. The title track is nearly perfect, with smooth hooks, a polished groove and an almost unrelenting upbeat energy. “My Body” is built around a sharp downstairs disco riff, punched up by a slippery funk bassline. Think of these tracks like a producer — pull them apart and try to see all the layers — and you might get inside Rasmus Faber’s mind. Press play and you’ll lose it again.
