A popular brand of mushroom-infused edibles is subject to a nationwide recall and the Food and Drug Administration is investigating reports of at least one death and illnesses serious enough to require hospitalization.
Diamond Shruumz, manufactured by Prophet Premium Blends, has been pulled off the shelves in a nationwide recall and should no longer be for sale anywhere in the United States.
The recall follows 48 reports of illnesses that may be linked to Diamond Shruumz products. Forty-six of the 48 people who reported becoming ill sought medical care and 27 were hospitalized as of July 2. The FDA is investigating one “potentially associated death.”
Diamond Shruumz is the brand name for a variety of “microdosing” chocolate bars, “infused” cones and “micro-dose” and “mega-dose”/extreme gummies. All are subject to the recall.
“People who became ill after eating Diamond Shruumz-brand products reported a variety of severe symptoms including seizures, central nervous system depression (loss of consciousness, confusion, sleepiness), agitation, abnormal heart rates, hyper/hypotension, nausea, and vomiting,” according to a July 2 update from the FDA, which has launched an investigation with the Centers for Disease Control.
The FDA announced their investigation on June 7, 2024, after receiving reports of eight people across four states reported becoming ill, possibly in connection with Diamond Shruumz-brand “Microdosing Chocolate bars.” The FDA claims to have urged the company to institute a voluntary recall, which was announced on June 27 2024.
While testing is underway, the FDA reports that Prophet Premium Blends has stated that “these products contain muscimol, a chemical found in some mushrooms, that could be a potential cause of symptoms consistent with some symptoms observed in individuals who became ill after consuming Diamond Shruumz-brand products. FDA is evaluating this information.”
The website for Diamond Shruumz now features a recall notice, stating that due to consumers “becoming ill after consuming the entire chocolate bar and some products containing higher levels of Muscimol than normal, it is crucial that all of our consumers refrain from ingesting this product while we, alongside the FDA, continue our investigation as to what is the cause of the serious adverse effects.”
Consumers who have purchased Diamond Shruumz products are being urged by the company to stop using the product and return it to 1019 Arlington St., Orlando, FL 32805, for a full refund.
