Roy Davis Jr’s Undaground Therapy Muzik label has reissued the Paul Johnson Club Land EP for the first time on digital platforms.
Originally released in 1997, Club Land features four tracks from the legendary Chicago producer, who 5 Mag featured in a special issue you can download for free here.
Club Land was created in Paul’s sample-heavy style from the early- to mid-’90s, laden with disco grooves ramped up like people dancing crazy in a silent film loop. The drums on Paul’s slow-burning remix of “With My Eyes” are just so sublime:
In a social media post, Roy Davis Jr. paid tribute to Paul Johnson, who passed away in 2021.
“When Paul left us, the scene was broken,” he wrote. “A man who carved out his own lane and carried himself through the scene with nothing but love and realness.
We got to release this record on @undagroundtherapy years ago, and for the first time we’re re-releasing it digitally. Remastered for you all! Hope you’re up there dancing brother. Love!”
