After Bear Who?’s interview for September, I decided it would be a good idea to review his upcoming single entitled “U Step” for November. There are seven total mixes to choose from here, one for people into any style of house good or bad. The original sounds like the lost B Side of a DJ International record circa 1998. It’s a hip house song featuring Pamp as the guest MC over some disco-sounding track work. It sounds a bit dated but might work well with young whipper-snappers.
On the remix tip the highlights include Derrick Carter’s “B.H.Q. Remix” where he uses signature shuffled drums which are complimented by some chopped up horns, sprinkled vocal stabs and a jackin’ bassline – great for peak time action. The Davidson Ospina mix uses a bit more of the vox as well as adds a sax that will go over well with the fans of Légo and the Latin sounds. For acid house fans, the Dirty Criminals mix is reminiscent of old Steve Poindexter work. The Inland Knights mix is the deepest of the bunch. It’s the type of work you come to expect from the duo and fits the template of their Drop Music releases. This version has already been licensed to the new Mark Farina mix CD Live in Tokyo out now on OM, creating a huge buzz for this release already. The other mixes are less than mentionable.
