Some tracks have that magic to them, that pixie dust or opal white powder blown into your eyes that clears your mind clear and takes you to wonderland. “Threewaves” has that magic. Call it a secret weapon if you like: a steamy, undeniably sensual burner lurking in the final slot of So What, a three track EP released by Chuck Daniels‘ Beatstrong Music and under his own name.

The title (which on my copy was “Threeway,” but I’m using the variation that’s commercially available) is a play on its origins — a collaboration between Detroit producers Daniels, Mike Agent X Clark and Claude Young. Bubbling little vocal clips bounce with the beats, a percussive layer as thick as an industrial haze that settles in the zone and seeps into every living thing. It’s one of those tracks that can’t be deconstructed, operating on instinct and unclone-able low-slung vibes. I love slow-burning tracks like this that just grind on — halfway through you’re not sure if it’s just getting started or winding down.
