Smooth soft-focus jazz-tinged disco and a tasty bruk-ish Inkswell remix make up this package from DJ/producer Ed Temple. The busy broken beats, wandering bass, future-jazzy feel and layered vocals of LYMA & Elf on the Inkswell “On My Mind” remix all work well, but are in contrast to the rest of the EP which is dreamy, synth-heavy 4/4 disco with a smattering of jazz seasoning. Lead track “Pink Velvet” gradually, via chugging synth arpeggios, some Philly strings and a bassline that people like me call “punchy” builds up to not one but two euphoric breakdowns, the second one sounding a little like MFSB heading off to Mars on their disco space ship in search of the one true light.
“Don’t Wait” is a highly competent instrumental with a spacious descending Moog-y bassline, wandering sax, dub FX, and sweeping orchestration that serves up six minutes of peaks, troughs and disco drama. Finally, “On My Mind,” with its vocals and soloing trumpet smothered in delay and reverb so they meld into each other into a pleasingly murky audio fug has a sunny, hazy ’70s jazz funk feel to it. Decent narco-disco.
