Deep house excellence from Gerd (Dutch producer Gert van Bijl) on Gentle Intensity, a six tracker on Andarta. Lead track “Hypno-Disco” is based around a highly effective bassline that’s also the main hook and which twists its way into your head while layers of congas, bongos and all sorts of percussion drive the groove on. There’s a spooky, edgy pad that floats away quietly in the background from time to time, giving things a slightly tripped-out feel, and it’s further coloured by little alien synth licks and assorted spacey FX. It’s an excellent jam that also comes in two other versions, a house mix that has more thud and less pitter-patter to it than the OG, and a bonus mix which plays up the beats and FX.

“Tape Machine” is a similar edgy, funky 4/4 track, based around a mean square wave bassline, with lots of lovely tripped out FX — hence the track title — going on all through the track. “Shape Shaker,” with its melancholy chord progression, gauzy production, and slightly retro feel, changes the mood a little, while “Echo Jam” is another dub-heavy, sound system-friendly drum/bass/percussion/FX workout. Super solid EP.
