This is one hell of a record: five tracks, three originals, two remixes and it may as well have been carved in gold and nailed to the side of an interplanetary space probe. Origins is a record by Gilbert, its sound a sophisticated and virulent strain of high tech soul, balanced on the axis where deep house and jazzy Detroit techno touch.
“Passage of Time” absolutely soars, a melodic acid trip with stainless steel percussion that cut clean through the haze. “We Are All Made of Stars” is one of those achingly beautiful tracks that simply exceed the spiritual and emotional limits that electronic music is supposed to abide by. The late, great Phil Western had a term that I think he coined himself and applied to his own compositions in this vein: melancholonica. Gilbert’s original tracks (all on the A side of Origins) shimmer and gleam but there’s also so much to dive into beneath their luscious surface beauty.
Origin’s B side is given over to a pair of remixes. The original mix of “Furthest Planet” is not on this EP but the Innate 004 compilation released in 2021. Nuron’s remix is solidly in the pocket with the aesthetic of Origins, with clean percussion and a sometimes somber, sometimes awestruck vibe. Apiento and Diego Herrera remix “We Are All Made of Stars” in a lovely and quirky late ’80s-house-meets-sci-fi throwback.
Gilbert is a co-founder of Innate but despite having reviewed, bought or listened to much of the label’s output over the last eight years I had to read that twice. Apparently he waited eight years before dropping a full EP of his own material under his own name on his own label. In an era of overwrought marketing and narcissism masked as “personal branding,” that’s pretty rare. And it was well worth the wait.
