John Silas is a new name to me but one we should keep a close eye on if this dazzling five track EP from Love Injection is any guide. On Water Sign he shows an affinity for warm, jazzy deep house elevated by exceedingly high quality musicianship.
“Boundaries” leads off hearkening back to the sound of the underground circa the early 2010s, when deep house was rejuvenated and infused with new energies by producers heavily influenced by the likes of Chez Damier, Ron Trent, Moodymann and Amp Fiddler. And also Patrice Scott, whose remix of “Cyber Dreams” is placed prominently high in the tracklisting. Scott isolates Domenica Fossati’s delicate flute to start, pairing it with an accelerating, hypnotic groove.
There’s a nasty sax on “Nasty,” and “Foster Child” bookends the EP with a flash of high tech soul. A “No Sax Mix” of “Nasty” is available as a digital bonus for the EP’s digital release in July; the vinyl was out in May. Remarkably sophisticated and confident EP; if the rest is this good, Silas must be considered one of deep house’s rising stars.
