In the grand tradition of beat tracks that beat it so hard they can only be called beatdown tracks, Jordan Gardner and Martyn Bootyspoon take a five word sample and loop it into oblivion. “Doubletap” is the new single from the Montreal producers, released with appropriate flourish on Bonobo‘s Outlier label.
“Doubletap” is as ferocious as it is versatile, hearkening back to the MPC crazed tracks of Chicago with credible sincerity. “Like the way you move” is the sample, and I don’t know how you get a more universal sentiment for the dancefloor than that. Gardner and Bootyspoon smear “Doubletap” down into a psychedelic paste, with warm ambient synths and swirling, muffled vocals designed to overwhelm and that’s what they do. That sample comes back as a lifeline, a rung on a ladder that your backfoot is dangling over in the dark.
Apparently “Doubletap” has been bouncing around as a secret weapon for two years now, debuted by Jacques Greene during a b2b with Bonobo at Piknic Électronik in 2022. Easy to see why: its nod-friendly groove lends itself to multiple slots and times and vibes.
