Ka§par is a master of the lost art of transmitting your soul through the medium of a machine. His fifth album, Thread Of Becoming, is an attempt at autobiography, and when you hear it you are listening to a person explain how he got the way he is by revisiting the music and moments that shaped him. Ka§par calls Thread Of Becoming “a map drawn from the inside out” — a process of discovery written down first and perhaps foremost as a diary for one’s self.
It starts where all of it started. “Fingaluv” suggests an homage to Mister Fingers and Larry Heard, with a warm tribute to the sound of his classic and underground cuts. On “Denialist” you can hear the ecstatic roar of Phuture meets Lil’Louis in a soulful 8 bit acid jam. It was an era when MIDI was new and required something like devil worship or animal sacrifice to make it work right, and tracks like these and the thrashing “Synchrowaltz” get the fundamentals and nuance down so good it’s uncanny.
Ka§par’s thread unspools toward the classic sound of New York on the album’s second half, with the early ’90s flash’n’grime of “Raw Dawg” and multi-genre and multicultural fusion of “Jogo Eleva” featuring Bambino and Milton Gulli. “Flirtatious D’Vice” is a solid chunk of stomping machine funk. Fusion is a key concept here — I’ve probably described much of the music as far more straightforward than it actually is, with Ka§par’s preternatural instincts for finding the groove and letting it flow taking precedence over fidelity to a specific era or artist.
