Say Who: Exquisite deep house from Luca Olivotto & Small Great Beats

This is blissful, euphoric deep house music — everything you want in an EP, four times over. I first heard Luca Olivotto on Cinthie‘s 803 Crystal Grooves Collective Cuts vol 8 and that was a pretty good set up for Say Who?!, out on vinyl at the end of the month on upstart imprint Small Great Beats.

Olivotto’s Say Who?! EP is split in two related but distinct halves. “I’ll Show You” has a lovely melody and crisp box top beats that just sound so good. It becomes more of an anthem than you’d think when you drop the needle, and that applies across the EP. “Love Spreader” is pure kinetic joy — flashing chords and pumping rhythms like classic Strictly (the real Strictly).

The two A side tracks are electrifying, sunny disco- & funk-infused tracks, either produced with live instruments or produced well enough to sound like it. The title track is a dream — a funky guitar strum, rubbery bass and exquisite production all the way through — and “Work” is a sleek, sexy beast. Olivotto has a strong but sure touch — rarely do his tracks have an unnecessary or superfluous element or anything that seems out of place.
