Four highly polished tracks on this latest Lazy Days EP Unfold, a Shur-I-Kan original featuring spoken word vocals from Juliet Mendoza, an instrumental version, and a remix and dub from label boss Fred Everything.
Fred Everything’s remixes are classy, neat, sparkling and glistening deep house takes that occupy a slightly less intense section of the deep house spectrum than the original version, but which would function very nicely as warm-ups to the main event if you fancied getting in the mix and working all three versions for a while. Meanwhile, S.I.K.’s instrumental is a strong jam, but if I’m honest, they could have released this as just one single — the original version — and I’d have been perfectly happy with it.
It’s a typically fresh deep house groove from Shur-I-Kan, made from clipped, precise, fresh drum timbres that provide a rhythmic base for a single house key stab sound — one of those instantly familiar tiny snippets of maybe electric piano mixed with synth, a chord that lasts less than a second — that plays out a little syncopated pattern, beginning life as a muffled mid-range rumble that gradually unfurls into life via some filter cut off twitching. He delivers a breakdown where he finally allows the keyboard riff to open up fully, very briefly, in an expertly engineered crowd-pleasing way while simultaneously keeping things cool and restrained, a difficult balance to maintain but one that’s always been his modus operandi, like a cat performing some highly impressive swoop and pounce move before sauntering off like it was nothing at all. I also love Juliet Mendoza’s voice and delivery, which matches the almost-haughty production aesthetic with a slinky but detached performance. Very cool jam.
