Daryl Cura’s last six tracks have been free downloads from Bandcamp and if you’re not hip to this then now is the time to get up to speed. Eargasmic is one of Chicago’s best labels and I’m saying that without qualification. It’s been around long enough and good enough that you can put them up there with the best, full stop. A good deal of that comes from a troupe of frequently appearing artists, a mix of veterans and relative newcomers, and a flair for A&R that ranges from the breathtaking jazz of Chicago deep house to the stomp of Midwest-style acid.
And here you hear a little of both that probably didn’t fit on full releases but found a home thanks to Bandcamp. Traverse Seventeen is four tracks that could have been on vinyl and I would have bought it: from the ambient, almost dubby jazz of “Wave Frontier,” the emotive deep groove of “Respire,” the aforementioned stomp of “Doorway 78” and the dented metal squawkbox of “Haywire” – this is a fantastic record.
This is also available to order on limited (like 50 pieces) of colored vinyl and a later general release.
