Incredibly fun record courtesy of Cinthie‘s 803 Crystal Grooves Collective Cuts imprint. Valerio Vaudano loves this retro house sound so much he reverse engineered it like a shaggy computer scientist hacking a ROM BIOS chip in 1982. The four tracks on Lose My Mind were apparently created “using a ’90s sampler without using a computer.”
Can you tell? I think you can — partly due to overall intent, and partly due to Vaudano intentionally limiting the selection of tools to those that might have reasonably been used when tracks that sound like these were made. Whether you think this is awesome or not (it is awesome), Vaudano has created a really exhilarating four track EP to drop on Valentine’s Day.
The title track to Lose My Mind has a vocal that just rips — a bright track with simple chords and a bass that slams. “Sunday Remedy” introduces some breaks with a pitched up vocal sample and random demands to drop the bass. Icy DX7 keys give it an off-kilter feel backed by a gnarly bassline. The fun continues on the B side with the early Victor Simonelli vibes of “Down The Street” and a vocal which scratches the same itch as Barbara Tucker’s (sampled) voice on Hardrive’s “Deep Inside.”
