We heard about the full moon raves being held out in the Bay Area even before we understood what a “rave” really was.
San Francisco had a magical pull on the entirety of the electronic music scene of the ’90s, a force that’s explored in Between The Beats, a new documentary directed by Wicked co-founder DJ Jenö and Martin O’Brien. It’s available now via VOD and streaming free on Tubi.
If the film sounds familiar, you’ve probably heard something about it before. Between The Beats was funded all the way back in 2011 via a successful Kickstarter. Reputedly plagued by trick and/or expensive rights clearances — even the promotional video on Kickstarter has vanished due to a DMCA claim — that means the film labored in production for longer than the golden age of the San Francisco rave scene actually lasted. Some of the funders were not pleased.
The film features appearances from Doc Martin, DJ Garth, DJ Harvey, Sunshine Jones, DJ Spun, filmmakers Jenö and O’Brien and a cast of thousands of the homegrown and transplanted freaks that made up the Bay Area scene circa 1993.
Originally released on October 15, 2024 to video on demand platforms Apple TV, Amazon and Google Play, Between The Beats is also now available on the free video platform Tubi.
