Rob Sherwood cleveland

Lady Miss Kier, Kenny Summit and Mike Filly are getting together on Saturday, March 31, 2018 to honor the memory of pioneering promoter/DJ Rob Sherwood.

Sherwood, the “wizard” behind nights at Cleveland institutions such as Trilogy, Metropolis, Aquiline and more, passed away on February 18 of this year.

“If not for Rob Sherwood, the underground scene in Cleveland would have looked a lot different or may not have existed at all,” Kevin and Danielle Bumpers of Groovehaus Cleveland said. “His uncompromising vision and determination aka his stubbornness led to some of the incredible moments in Cleveland underground history.”

Sherwood’s influence extended beyond the front door to the DJ booth with remixes for Deee-Lite, Sparks, My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult, the Lightning Seeds, and Sagat (the unavoidable “Fuk Dat”). It was also Sherwood’s voice sampled on Josh Wink’s “Are You There?”, remixed by Ben Klock a few years ago as part of Ovum’s 20th anniversary:

“My idea,” Sherwood told the Cleveland Plain Dealer, “has always been to bring the gay bar concept and sell it to a straight audience.”

“We were misfits that did not fit the profile of the mainstream venues,” Danielle said. “Rob tapped into what was going on into New York and Chicago and introduced people to an entirely new world.”

Tim Nekuza and Dick Russell – close friends who referred to Sherwood as “Jane” – are throwing JANE: A Tribute to Rob Sherwood, on Saturday, March 31 2018 at Sachsenheim Hall in Cleveland at 7pm, with music provided by Lady Miss Kier, Kenny Summit and Mike Filly. Jane will “feature a sensuous performance spectacle combining drag and dance, featuring creatures of the night both legendary and au courant.”

More info is available on JANE’s Facebook event page.
