One of dance music’s most ubiquitous bootlegs is finally getting an official release.
Fatboy Slim’s “Satisfaction Skank,” originally made more than two decades ago but never issued by a label, will be officially released today after the Rolling Stones finally cleared the sampled riff from the legendary rock anthem “Satisfaction.”
“It was my secret weapon,” Fatboy Slim (aka Norman Cook) told the BBC this morning in announcing the surprise release. Made 25 years ago, Cook approached the Rolling Stones four times over the years but Stones’ management “was just like, ‘No, not even negotiable.'”
Cook also revealed that the two sides had been close enough to a conclusion some years ago to discuss releasing “Satisfaction Skank” as the b-side to a sanctioned Cook remix of “Sympathy For The Devil.” The project never got off the ground, though, and “Skank” circulated underground, clipped from various Fatboy Slim sets for another decade.
As a sign of how much things have changed, the Rolling Stones even provided Cook with the master tapes of “Satisfaction” for the sample on the new official release.
The YouTube video above features the official release, which is also on sale today at Beatport and other shops.
