A new mural will be unveiled today in Chicago paying tribute to Frankie Knuckles, house music and cult house label Gherkin Records.
Artist Max Sansing will unveil a new work titled “Under One Roof” at the Uptown Branch of the Chicago Public Library today (Saturday September 28 2024) at 11am until 12:30pm. On hand for the unveiling will be Chicago Public Library Commissioner Chris Brown, Frederick Dunson of the Frankie Knuckles Foundation with music by DJ Purple. There will also be crafts, kids activities and (we are told) cake.
The mural pays tribute to the late, great Frankie Knuckles and the diversity of the Uptown and Buena Park neighborhoods as well as Gherkin Records, the seminal Chicago house label that was once located across the street at 916 W. Buena.
The mural was funded by the City of Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE) and managed by Chicago Public Art Group.
Last year, another public mural of Frankie Knuckles at 815 W. Hubbard Street was painted over after repeated vandalism to it and a neighboring mural to Juice WRLD.
The artist of the new mural, Max Sansing is “a Chicago-based fine artist and one of the cityβs most prolific and talented muralists. His distinct aesthetic fuses the color-drenched dynamism of street art with the technical elegance of photorealism.”
The Uptown branch of the Chicago Public Library is at 929 W. Buena Avenue.
