In its time, the Under The Influence compilation series from Joey Negro‘s Z Records has unearthed a motherlode of rare and forgotten treasures, disco and boogie and funk records known primarily to collectors and DJs deep in the roots of dance music, if by anyone at all.
Such is the case with Oscar Perry’s “Body Movements,” the crowning glory of the R&B and soul crooner recorded in the closing of the most fertile period of his six decade career. The full album Body Movements, released in 1979 on local Houston label Gamma, fetches a couple hundred dollars on discogs; the 12″ is not much more of a bargain. Moreover almost nobody seems to have it, or is comfortable parting with it.
And that brings us back to the present. Under The Influence is about to turn the dial up for Volume Six, compiled by Robin and Simon Lee of Faze Action. The double CD/double wax set is studded with gems from the roots of dance music, among them Oscar Perry’s crazy sax and uptempo shuffle, with a quality that likely hasn’t been heard by more than a few hundred people in more than 30 years.
