I’m a big fan of Franck Rogers’ crispy, club-friendly house grooves and he’s done a good job here with this collaboration with NYC house vocalist Arnold Jarvis, crafting a kick-drum-heavy vocal house jam, the pads and drums of which have a distinctly ’90s house old-school flavour, as does the Korg MS-20-ish sounding keyboard lead that drops in and out of the mix, but all done within a contemporary-feeling production.
But it’s the pair of Jimpster remixes that are really doing it for me here, the Freerange and Delusions of Grandeur co-label boss delivering a vocal mix and a dub that manage to make the most of Jarvis’ vocals, framing them in a production that brings out his simple yearning melody. He serves up an unsurprisingly high-quality house-drums-and-square-bass rhythm section that locks in and drives along very nicely, all his lovely little details of percussion perfectly placed in the audio field. The synths and chords that he builds around the vocal range from big and brassy analog chords to ’80s street soul synth flourishes and expertly programmed chimes neatly slotted in between.
The Jimpster dub mix is made from the exact same elements, sans most of the vocal, with a few little snippets left to run through lots of delay FX, and is a track strong enough to more than adequately serve as a warm-up to the main event or as a quality jam in its own right.
